News about the Swedish citizenship test

Schools in Stockholm report a sharp rise in SFI exams, Swedish Radio says. A pass in SFI course D shows your Swedish for citizenship, but you prepare on your own and are assessed on all parts of the course.

About 80 per cent of the 875 people who took the citizenship test in August passed. The pass mark was 28 of 40 points, and UHR plans the next test for April or May 2027.

While the results of the August test were pending, the Migration Agency could grant few citizenships. The results came on 22 October, and UHR plans the next test for April–May 2027.

UHR tells the government that the test in Swedish cannot be ready by 1 October 2027 and proposes autumn 2029. The language requirement still applies, and the civics test is not affected.

By 30 September 2026, UHR must report a new timeline for the test in Swedish, which under the law must exist by 1 October 2027 at the latest.

875 people took the first Swedish citizenship test in Stockholm on 15 August 2026, and several participants said the language was the hard part.

From 6 June 2026, stricter requirements apply for Swedish citizenship, and they also apply to applications that have already been submitted.

The Swedish citizenship test costs SEK 2,000 for tests held from 2027, under the ordinance published on 6 May 2026. Tests during 2026 are free.
