What we know about the test

The rules are new and most of what is written about the test online is guesswork. We only write what UHR and the Migration Agency have published, with a source and a date.

  6. 12 July 2026An exception from the permanent permit requirement.

    Some people with temporary permits, for example refugees, can apply for citizenship. Who is covered.

  7. 6 June 2026The test is part of the knowledge requirement.

How the course works

  1. Read one chapter at a time. Every lesson explains the chapter in plain Swedish, with the words the test uses.
  2. Answer questions straight after. Every question has an explanation and a page reference to Sverige i fokus, so you see where the answer is.
  3. Take the mock test. The same form as the August test: multiple-choice questions against the clock, mixed from all chapters.
  4. Revise what you missed. The course keeps track of which chapters you need to read again.

SFI course D exam: more people apply, but schools warn

Schools in Stockholm report a sharp rise in SFI exams, Swedish Radio says. A pass in SFI course D shows your Swedish for citizenship, but you prepare on your own and are assessed on all parts of the course.

About 80 per cent of the 875 people who took the citizenship test in August passed. The pass mark was 28 of 40 points, and UHR plans the next test for April or May 2027.

Several participants in the first test said the language was the hard part. The glossary explains 321 words in plain language, from Sverige i fokus and from the application and the test, with a mini test for each word where you try the word in a sentence.

Who is behind the course

Frequently asked questions about the Swedish citizenship test

What is the Swedish citizenship test?

A test in civics (samhällskunskap) run by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR). It has been part of the knowledge requirement for Swedish citizenship since 6 June 2026 and is based on UHR's study material Sverige i fokus.

Who has to take the test?

Anyone who applies for Swedish citizenship and is between 16 and 66, unless they can show the knowledge in another way, for example with a grade in civics from a Swedish school. The Migration Agency decides and sends a letter telling you to register.

What did the first test look like?

The test on 15 August 2026 had 60 multiple-choice questions with four options, on paper and in Swedish, with 90 minutes of test time. It was a trial test: 40 of the questions counted. UHR has not published the format of the next test.

What is needed to pass?

In the August 2026 test the pass mark was 28 of 40 points, and about 80 per cent passed. The pass mark is set after each test. The University of Gothenburg, which develops the test, writes that the number of correct answers needed can therefore differ between sittings. So do not count on exactly 28 next time.

Is Medborgarskapskursen an official course?

No. Medborgarskapskursen is an independent course from Znoff AB and has no connection to UHR or the Migration Agency. The content is based on the official study material, but the questions are our own.

What does the course cost?

SEK 99 per month, SEK 249 for three months or SEK 499 for a full year. VAT included. You pay by card, Klarna or Apple Pay, the course opens immediately and you cancel whenever you like.
