Next Swedish citizenship test date: location and what is known

When is the next Swedish citizenship test?

The short answer: nobody knows yet. UHR’s page Frågor och svar, updated 26 August 2026, says that information about the next test will be announced on uhr.se during the autumn. There is no date.

The first test was held on 15 August 2026. It was a trial test (utprövningsprov). UHR is now marking it and will publish the results in October. We cannot say whether the next test will come before or after the results. UHR has not said.

Sites that state a date for the next test are guessing. Only trust uhr.se.

Where will the next test be held?

The August test was held at Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö. That was the only location. The Migration Agency wrote as early as May 2026 that the test would be held in Stockholm.

For the next test, UHR says information about where the test can be taken will come. There may be more locations. It may also be Stockholm only again. We do not know.

How many places are there?

In August the number of places was limited and registration closed when it was full. The Migration Agency wrote in its forecast in July 2026 that the exact number of places and test occasions (provtillfällen) has not yet been set.

That means you should be quick when registration opens. Have your UHR account ready in advance. How to do that is explained in our guide on how to register.

What will the next test look like?

That has not been published. UHR writes that information about the test time and number of questions for the next test occasion will come.

For comparison: the August test had 60 multiple-choice questions with four options, 90 minutes of test time, on paper and in Swedish. It may be the same format again, but UHR has not said so. The test will be in Swedish, that is stated in the law.

The pass mark has not been published either. UHR sets it afterwards based on the August test and publishes it in October 2026.

How much will the next test cost?

It depends on when it is held. Under the ordinance on the citizenship test, the fee is SEK 2,000, paid to UHR. The rule applies for the first time to tests held in 2027. If the next test is held during 2026 it is free. If it is held in 2027 it costs SEK 2,000. Stateless people who have been granted refugee status or a travel document are exempt from the fee.

How did it work before the August test?

The first test can give an idea of how it usually works, even though the next test may differ. This is what the timeline looked like:

  • 6 May 2026: the Migration Agency announced that the first test would be held in August in Stockholm.
  • Summer 2026: UHR opened registration for people who had received a referral letter. Places were limited and registration closed when it was full. Applications for adjustments could be supplemented until 2 July.
  • About a week before the test: the notice (kallelse) arrived in the UHR account.
  • 15 August 2026: the test was held at Stockholmsmässan.
  • 26 August 2026: UHR updated its page with the message that the next test will be announced during the autumn.

Exactly when registration opened and closed has not been published on UHR’s current page.

How many people need to take the test?

Demand is high. In the government bill, the government expects around 21,000 test participants per year in civics from 2027, plus retakes. For the August test there were, according to GP/TT, only 1,000 places, and TT wrote in May that over 34,000 of those who had already applied were assessed as needing to take the test. The figures on places and the queue are media reports, not UHR’s.

That means places may run out quickly next time too. So the best advice is to have your account ready before registration opens.

How to stay updated

  1. Check UHR’s page Frågor och svar. That is where UHR updates the information about the next test.
  2. Keep your UHR account ready. Then you can register as soon as registration opens.
  3. Check that your ID is valid. Only Swedish ID with a personal identity number is accepted.
  4. Read the Migration Agency’s news. They write when something changes in the rules.
  5. Come back here. We update this page when UHR publishes a date, location or format, and write a news item about it.

What can you do while you wait?

Study. The next test is based on the same study material as the August test, Sverige i fokus. Participants in August told the media that the language in the questions was the hard part. The date will come. Have your account ready, your ID valid and the material read when it does. And only trust what is on uhr.se: neither we nor any other site knows more than UHR about the next test.

Will I get a letter when the date is set?

UHR says the date will be announced on uhr.se. The notice with the time and place arrives in your account about a week before the test. We do not know whether the Migration Agency sends any letter.

Does the next test cost anything?

Tests during 2026 are free. If the test is held in 2027 it costs SEK 2,000, paid to UHR.

Do I have to register again if I took the August test?

Yes. UHR says you must make a new registration.

How many tests will there be per year?

That has not been decided. The Migration Agency wrote in July 2026 that the number of places and test occasions has not yet been set.

Can I take the test somewhere other than Stockholm?

Nobody knows yet. In August there was only Stockholm. UHR says information about where the next test can be taken will come.
