Frequently asked questions about the Swedish citizenship test

A test in civics (samhällskunskap) run by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR). It has been part of the knowledge requirement for Swedish citizenship since 6 June 2026 and is based on UHR's study material Sverige i fokus. The test contains questions about, among other things, the system of government, laws, rights, the labour market, welfare, history, religion and traditions.

Anyone who applies for Swedish citizenship and is between 16 and 66, unless they can show the knowledge in another way. A pass grade in civics from year 9, upper secondary school, folk high school or komvux counts. SFI does not count for the civics part. The Migration Agency decides whether you have to take the test and sends a referral letter (anvisningsbrev).

First you need a referral letter (anvisningsbrev) from the Migration Agency. Then you create an account at medborgarskapsprovet.uhr.se with BankID, Freja eID or your personal identity number and the code in the letter, and register when registration is open. The notice (kallelse) arrives in your account about a week before the test. Right now registration is closed, and UHR will announce the next date during autumn 2026.

That has not been published. UHR says information about the next test occasion will be announced on uhr.se during autumn 2026, and that you must make a new registration. Locations and the number of places have not been announced either. We will write a news item as soon as UHR publishes the date.

Tests held during 2026 are free. For tests held from 2027 the fee is SEK 2,000, under the ordinance on the citizenship test (SFS 2026:451). Stateless people with refugee status or a travel document are exempt. The application fee for citizenship, SEK 2,900, is a separate fee paid to the Migration Agency.

The first test was held on 15 August 2026 at Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö. It had 60 multiple-choice questions with four options, on paper and in Swedish, with 90 minutes of test time. UHR has not published the format of the next test.

UHR has not published a pass mark. The August test was a trial test and the pass mark is set afterwards. UHR says the results will be published in October 2026. We will write about the pass mark as soon as it is known. Sites that state a pass mark today are guessing.

UHR says that anyone who fails may be given the opportunity to show their knowledge again, and that you then make a new registration. UHR refers questions about your own case to the Migration Agency. SVT has reported that a retake will not be possible, but UHR's own information carries more weight. If you are unsure, ask UHR or the Migration Agency.

The results of the test on 15 August 2026 will be published in October 2026 according to UHR. No exact date has been set. While waiting for the results, the Migration Agency is mainly deciding cases that will be rejected.

No. UHR says the citizenship test can only be taken in Swedish. The test is written in Swedish at a functional level, which the government compares to level B1. It is a 48-page PDF with 13 chapters and an introduction, and every chapter is also available as an mp3. UHR says the test is based on the material. It is free to download from uhr.se. The material was corrected on 10 August 2026.

Yes, UHR can grant adjustments, for example for dyslexia, ADHD or visual impairment. You apply for them with UHR when you register. On test day you need Swedish ID with a personal identity number: foreign passports and e-ID are not accepted. There are no penalty points for wrong answers, so UHR encourages you to answer every question.

In September 2026 the Migration Agency states that 75 percent of recently decided cases were decided within 53 months. The time varies a lot between cases. You can see the current processing time on the Migration Agency's website.

Yes. There are no transitional rules. The Migration Agency assesses every case that was not decided on 6 June 2026 under the new requirements, even if the application was submitted earlier. That includes the knowledge requirement.

Proven identity, a permanent residence permit as the main rule, residence in Sweden for 8 years, good and honest conduct, self-support (at least SEK 250,200 per year in 2026 for anyone aged 18 to 67) and knowledge of Swedish and of Swedish society. There are exceptions to several of the requirements, for example a shorter residence period for Nordic citizens, stateless people and refugees.

The requirement of knowledge of Swedish already applies, but UHR's language test does not exist yet. Today you show the knowledge with a grade in Swedish or Swedish as a second language, a pass in SFI course D, Tisus or another test at a functional level, for example Swedex. Under the law, the test in reading and listening comprehension (level B1) must exist by 1 October 2027 at the latest. The test in speaking and writing (level A2) comes later.

No. Medborgarskapskursen is an independent course from Znoff AB and has no connection to UHR or the Migration Agency. UHR writes that the agency does not endorse private practice tests. Our course is based on the official study material, but the lessons and questions are our own.

No. The real test questions are not public. UHR has published five sample questions, and we say clearly which ones are UHR's. All other questions are our own, written from Sverige i fokus, with an explanation and a page reference.
