The first Swedish citizenship test was held on 15 August 2026

Almost 1,000 people took the first Swedish citizenship test in Stockholm on 15 August 2026, and participants said the language was the hard part.

On Saturday 15 August 2026, Sweden’s first citizenship test was held. The venue was Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö. According to SVT, almost 1,000 people took part. The test was a trial test (utprövningsprov), and the results are due in October.

What happened?

The test in civics (samhällskunskap) is the first stage of the citizenship test that the government commissioned UHR to develop. Under the government decision, it was to be held for the first time by 17 August 2026 at the latest. UHR held it on 15 August.

This is what the test looked like according to UHR’s information before test day:

  • 60 multiple-choice questions with four options, one correct
  • 90 minutes of test time
  • on paper and in Swedish
  • a short survey about the test afterwards

There were no penalty points. The test was free.

What did participants think?

What we know comes from the media. SVT spoke to participants outside Stockholmsmässan. One participant said some questions were a bit tricky, especially questions about how power is divided between the state and the municipalities and questions about history. Another thought many Swedes would not pass the questions. A third found the test easy.

The Local interviewed participants two days later. Several said the language was the hard part. One example mentioned is the word “nederbörd” (precipitation), which was in the test, while the study material uses the word “regn” (rain). One participant thought the questions were strangely worded. Another said the answer options were confusing.

The Local also reported that participants received different sets of questions, because some questions were being tried out for future tests. That is consistent with UHR calling the test a trial test.

What happens now?

UHR marks the test and sets the pass mark afterwards. The results will be published in October 2026. Until then, nobody knows how many correct answers are needed.

The date of the next test has not been published. UHR says it will be announced during the autumn. The format of the next test has not been published either. The fact that the August test had 60 questions does not mean the next one will.

What does it mean for you?

Did you take the test in August? Then you will get your result in your UHR account in October. UHR also passes the information to the Migration Agency (Migrationsverket). If you fail, UHR says you may be given the opportunity to show your knowledge again and that you should contact the Migration Agency. SVT reported that in future a retake will not be possible. We cannot decide which applies. Ask the Migration Agency.
