ID card in Sweden
You need a Swedish ID card at the bank, at the authorities and on the test day. On 1 December 2026 the ID cards move from the Tax Agency to the Police. Here are both routes.
From 1 December 2026: the Police
From 1 December 2026, everyone who wants a new ID card should go to the Police. If you are registered but not a Swedish citizen, you get an ID card without travel function there, with the e-ID SverigeID. You book a time from 1 November 2026 on phone 114 14.
On the same day, eight of the Tax Agency's service offices stop accepting ID card applications: Stockholm Globen, Stockholm Kista, Malmö Värnhem, Göteborg Järntorget, Eskilstuna, Helsingborg, Norrköping and Trollhättan.
The government proposes that the Tax Agency's ID card ends on 1 March 2027. Until the end of February 2027 it should be possible to apply to the Tax Agency as today. Cards already issued should remain valid until they expire. The proposal has not been decided.
The Tax Agency's ID card: who can get it?
You must be registered, have a personal number and be at least 13. The fee is 400 kronor and must be paid when you apply. If you are under 18, you need written consent from your guardians, from both if there are two.
You apply in person at a service office that issues ID cards, after booking a time. You are photographed there.
How you prove who you are
If you have a residence permit, the Tax Agency can compare your details with the Migration Agency's registration, meaning your residence permit card.
Passports from countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland are not on the list of approved ID documents. If you have no approved ID, a guarantor can come with you and confirm who you are. It can be, for example, your spouse, a parent, a sibling over 18 or a partner you have lived with for at least 6 months. An employer of at least 1 year can also do it, with a certificate about the relationship.
In some cases other documents are accepted in an overall assessment. Do not bring a population register extract.
When the card is ready
The card is ready after about 2 weeks. You collect it in person at the service office within 2 months. It is valid for at most 5 years, and the Tax Agency sends no reminder.
The card is only valid in Sweden. It is not a travel document. It contains an e-ID for the Tax Agency's e-services.
On the test day, UHR accepts the Tax Agency's ID card, a Swedish driving licence and a Swedish SIS-marked ID card. An expired ID is not valid. UHR has not yet said if it accepts the Police's new card without travel function.
