BankID and e-ID
With an e-ID you log in to the authorities. BankID is the most common, but you can get far without it. Here is what you need and what you can do in the meantime.
What you need for BankID
- A Swedish personal number. You get it when you are registered in the population register. Personal number and registration
- A bank that issues BankID. You need to be a customer of the bank.
- An approved ID document. The bank checks who you are. If you get BankID remotely, you may need to scan a Swedish passport or national ID card. Some banks accept foreign ID documents.
The banks decide which ID documents they accept and their age limit, usually 13 or 18. If you do not have an approved ID document, ask your bank what applies.
Freja: free and without a bank account
Freja is a state-approved e-ID in an app. It is free and does not need a bank account.
- Foreign citizens can get Freja+ with a verified coordination number and a passport or ID card from the EU/EEA. It also works with a Swedish personal number and a Swedish ID document.
- From 21 December 2026 you can no longer register in Freja with a Swedish driving licence or the Tax Agency's ID card. Freja+ can then no longer be obtained through agents.
SverigeID from the Police
On 1 December 2026 the Police launch the state e-ID SverigeID. You can apply even if you are not a Swedish citizen, as long as you are registered in the population register.
You then get SverigeID linked to an ID card without travel function. You book a time from 1 November 2026 on phone 114 14. It is only possible at some police stations.
With the Migration Agency, the Tax Agency and UHR
- The Migration Agency. You can apply in the e-services with Freja registered with just an email address, or with a username and password. Freja Plus gives full access but needs a personal number. To read your decision on My Page you need BankID.
- The Tax Agency. Notification of moving to Sweden is made with an e-ID. If you do not have one, you can use the Freja app.
- UHR. You can create the account for registering for the test with BankID, Freja or with your personal number and the code in your letter of referral.
On the test day an e-ID is not accepted as identification. You need a physical Swedish ID document with a personal number.
