Value added tax: a tax included in the price of almost everything you buy, which the seller passes on to the state.

Facts about the word

  • In Sweden the standard VAT rate is 25 per cent. Lower rates apply to, for example, food, books and public transport.
  • VAT is often shown on the receipt, but the price in the shop always includes VAT.
  • VAT is a tax on consumption, unlike income tax which is taken from wages.
