The body that decides whether someone has broken the law and settles disputes. The courts are independent of politicians.

Facts about the word

  • Criminal cases and disputes go to the district court first, then the court of appeal and finally the Supreme Court.
  • Disputes with authorities are tried in administrative courts: the administrative court, the administrative court of appeal and the Supreme Administrative Court.
  • In the district court a legally trained judge rules together with lay judges, who are appointed by politicians but are not lawyers.
